DmC: Devil May Cry is an upcoming hack and slash beat 'em up video game developed by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows.[2][5] Announced in late 2010,[6] the game is set in a alternate reality in the Devil May Cry series.[7] It will focus on the player character Dante, a teen able to use supernatural powers, who finds himself under attack by a seemingly sentient town known as Limbo City populated by demons.

Gameplay

Dante uses multiple attacks to defeat enemies. Dante has access to several weapons swords and guns which he can exchange in the middle of a fight to perform a combo.[8] Although Dante is primarily in human form, the player has access to his angel and demon powers that add a large variety of attacks.

This is represented by the fact that Dante's black hair changes to white during a sequence of combos.Limbo Town's structure changes several times across the game, giving the player puzzles in order to advance.

Plot

The game is set in a parallel universe in the Devil May Cry series.[7] The story tells of a younger Dante (voiced by Tim Phillips) in the fictitious Limbo City, a dreary city that appears calm at first, but transforms into a twisted parody of itself with demons and other monstrosities who frequently attempt to kill him whenever he is seen by the demons.[8] During the game, Dante is frequently taunted and stalked by Mundus (portrayed in this version as a rich human-looking demon with a god complex), who seeks to have Dante killed.

Development

The game was officially announced by Capcom at their press conference during the 2010 Tokyo Game Show in September, confirming an earlier rumor in the May 2010 issue of Game Informer which said that the fifth Devil May Cry game would be developed by Ninja Theory.

Its creative director Tameem Antoniades stated that DmC's combat system would contain mechanics that would set him apart from previous Platinum Games' titles with Platinum's Hideki Kamiya being the creator of Devil May Cry. Lead producer Alex Jones stated they still wanted to compete with Platinum in terms of gameplay and storytelling. The idea of a town being alive that wishes to kill the player was added a new element never seen before in the Devil May Cry series. The actions of Limbo Town are inspired by previous Devil May Cry games, where the environments would close whenever Dante was surrounded by enemies. Most of the game was finished as of April 2012 with Capcom aiding Ninja Theory in tweaking few aspects for the final product. Capcom became heavily involved in the combat system to ensure the character's responsive moves and add new air combos never seen before in the franchise.

Dante's original design was originally meant to be similar to the ones from previous games, but Capcom told the Ninja Theory staff it had to be completely different in order to appeal to a younger demographic. The final model was inspired by Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight as Tameem Antoniades from Ninja Theory commented they wished to make character

realistic. In an interview published on the videogame blog Kotaku Jones explained that he has received numerous death threats in the form of comic books and a metal song due to the controversial decision to reboot the series.Antoniades responded to criticism stating they would not change the design as the character is supposed to fit within the game's setting.Nevetheless, Antoniades stated that the gameplay would be similar to previous Devil May Cry.In November 2011, an extended trailer and new concept art was released. In May 2012, Capcom announced they expect the game to sell 2 million copies by the ending of this fiscal year without giving yet a proper release date. The music for the game is being composed by electronic groups Noisia and Combichrist.

Pre-release reception

Reception to the new design of Dante and change in direction of the series was mixed.Video game publications 1UP.com and GamesRadar found such claims exaggerated with the former finding the demo's gameplay and humor enjoyable and the latter being optimistic about how the release of the game could affect the franchise.

Various other sites also listed it as one of the most anticipated games of 2012 stating that despite the controversy the game caused, it looked promising owing to the presentation and the fact the gameplay had yet to be tested.

God of War: Ascension is an upcoming third person action-adventure video game being developed by SCE Santa Monica Studio and to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is scheduled to be released on March 12, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 video game console. The game will be the seventh installment in the God of War series and a prequel to the entire series. The game will be the first installment in the series to feature multiplayer and to be developed with Stereoscopic 3D. The game will also feature a revamped combat and weapon system, and new gameplay mechanics.

Loosely based on Greek mythology, the game will be set in Ancient Greece with the player controlling the protagonist Kratos, who attempts to sever ties with the God of War, Ares, who tricked Kratos into murdering his wife and child. God of War: Ascension will chronologically be the first chapter in the series, forming part of a saga with vengeance as a central theme.

Gameplay
Single-player

The single-player will feature a "revamped" combat and weapon system, "promptless" mini-games and new puzzles. Sony stated the game will offer "fluid, life-like characters, dynamic lighting effects, and world-changing scenarios", although the story is "a little bit shorter" than previous games.

At E3 2012, a single-player demo showcased new gameplay mechanics and combat systems. The demo revealed a revamped quick time event mini-game, which replaces some button prompts with a new prompt-less free-form system (players needing to time attacks or evasion based on enemy's actions, as opposed to an indicated button prompt). Kratos was also shown to be capable of picking up (and stealing) weapons for use against opponents (also allowing Kratos to switch weapons mid-combo), and swing opponents through the air whilst simultaneously attacking. Other new features include the ability to create shockwaves and the "Life Cycle" mechanic: allowing Kratos to freeze enemies and manipulate time to control various objects for puzzle solving. Several new enemies were also featured, such as the Elephantaur and the sea beast Charybdis.

Multiplayer

The game will offer a multiplayer feature for up to eight players, with a small story element. Players will be on two teams of four where the teams will try to take control of a map in order to earn rewards from the gods, although the players must first sell their champion's soul to one of four deities: Zeus, Hades, Ares, or Poseidon. This decision allows players to trial different weapons, armor sets, and powers inspired by the god of their choice, with extras such as customizable avatar warriors and other multiplayer features able to be unlocked.

The first trial demonstration indicates an apparent struggle between Sparta and Troy for control of territory, with the Titan cyclops Polyphemus also in play attacking the warring armies. Contested zones also contain mechanical gears that control the chains binding the one-eyed giant, and after capturing multiple gears, the gods award the Spartan soldiers with the Spear of Olympus, which in turn provides the power needed to dispatch Polyphemus. The mode fluctuates from attack and defend, forcing Sparta to hold the territory gained as they attempt to destroy Polyphemus. If Troy regains control of territory, Polyphemus resets to original position and the Spear is lost.

Plot

The story behind God of War: Ascension tells the journey of Kratos’ redemption from his past sins and the rise of his rage to break free from Ares' bond.[3] According to the official God of War: Ascension website, the game is set six months after Kratos murdered his wife and child.[10] Joystiq confirms "players will be introduced to a more human Kratos than ever before" with director Todd Papy stating that the game will be "giving people a look at Kratos' human side so fans can relate to him better and understand some of the stuff he went through when he was younger."[9] Papy also confirmed that Kratos will have the "Blades of Chaos" and that the story takes place after Kratos sold his soul to Ares.

Development

John Hight, studio director at Santa Monica, advised Joystiq that "while God of War III will conclude the trilogy, it won't spell the end of the franchise", and claimed "We're going to be really careful about what we do next."

In April 2011, PSM3 magazine printed that a source that "works closely with the God of War universe" claimed a fourth entry in the series is set for release around September 2012.[13] A month later Official PlayStation Magazine also mentioned God of War IV and claimed it will feature an online component.[14] New Zealand-based online retailer Mighty Ape then listed God of War IV for release in 2012.[15] In early 2012, composer Timothy Williams listed God of War IV on his resume,[2] followed by David Thornfield, an animator from the motion capture studio "House of Moves", who listed God of War IV on his LinkedIn.[16] During Sony's retailer-only Destination PlayStation event, Canadian retailer Future Shop, then indicated on Twitter that God of War IV is imminent.[17]

The official PlayStation Facebook page released a teaser image (with the text "Will Vengeance Bring Redemption?") on April 12, 2012. The announcement trailer was released on April 19, 2012 and announced Todd Papy as Game Director, who was previously the Design Director for God of War III,[1] although Amazon leaked the news a day early[18] (Stig Asmussen did not return to direct as he is "doing cool stuff" at Santa Monica, according to David Jaffe.

The trailer, narrated by Linda Hunt, refers to a time before Kratos became the "Ghost of Sparta" and was not "bound in blood." The announcement officially confirmed the name of the game as God of War: Ascension. Papy notes that the game was not titled God of War IV to avoid confusion as it is a prequel, rather than sequel, to the trilogy. The game's name was chosen as it compliments the story and also the additional multiplayer component, as in this mode players are "basically ascending from an unknown hero to a god".[11]

On April 30, 2012, it was confirmed that the game will feature a retooled God of War III engine, enabling online and offline multiplayer battles for up to eight players. Papy confirmed that in order to allow customization, Kratos and other known gods will not be included in the multiplayer modes as playable characters, as the developers did not want "red Kratos, blue Kratos, yellow Kratos" and selecting gods would lock-in players to established roles. This decision was made "...to balance the game when players are pitted against each other."[9] Papy also noted that there will be no female characters because each character in multiplayer mode is based on Kratos' animation model.[9]

David Jaffe, Game Director of the original God of War, shared his thoughts with NowGamer on where Kratos should go in Ascension.

Jaffe stated that if he was working on the game, it would incorporate three specific elements: different myths, add a co-star, and "look to the Zelda structure as a jumping off point." He stated a co-op mode "would be cool," where "player one be Kratos and player two be this stupid annoying sidekick that – for some to be determined story reason – Kratos is stuck with for the whole adventure and in the end, once the main quest is over, Kratos just snaps the poor kid's neck.
"[20] Jaffe later spoke to IGN about the multiplayer stating "I think it looks cool. It looks like another great, impeccably executed Sony Santa Monica game" and claimed that "If [multiplayer] turns out to be the case that the single player is watered down because of it, then I think they have some justification. But I don’t see any evidence of that, and I don’t see evidence of that based on the team they are."[21]

At Sony's E3 2012 press conference on June 4, the North American release date was confirmed for March 12, 2013. A single-player demo was also shown revealing new gameplay mechanics and combat systems. On June 4 on the PlayStation.

Blog, Papy confirmed God of War: Ascension is being developed to feature Stereoscopic 3D: "we are creating the game in an intelligent way for 3D and not just a converted experience" (although God of War: Origins Collection featured 3D it was a converted experience). Papy also confirmed a Collector's Edition with a limited edition Kratos statue.

Lost Planet 3 is an upcoming 2013 third-person shooter video game developed by Spark Unlimited and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. The game is the prequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Lost Planet 2 takes place on the same planet of E.D.N. III albeit before the events of the first two games. The game will take a more story-driven narrative approach to the campaign similar to the first game. Unlike previous games in the series, which were developed internally by Capcom, the game will be developed externally by Spark Unlimited though series creator, Kenji Oguro, is still game director. This follows a recent trend of Capcom games being developed by Western developers rather than internally, such as DmC: Devil May Cry.

Plot

The game takes place long before the events of the first game, and hence the planet of E.D.N. III is still in an ice-age like environment rather than the tropical environment of the second game that occurs after the events of the first game. It takes place during the time of the first few human colonists on E.D.N. III sent there by the Neo-Venus Construction company or NEVEC, who later become the main antagonists for the series. The game follows the story of Jim, a colonist who

is working for NEVEC and helping mine the planet and sending minerals back to Earth, where his family awaits him. The game, however, doesn't feature militarised VS bipedal mechs

like previous entries in the series, and instead features mechs called Rigs that are the predecessor's of VS mech's given the timeline of the game. Unlike VS mechs, Rigs aren't militarised with weapons and instead are equipped with drill arms and claw arms for mining.

In the first game, NEVEC had become a dictatorial force on E.D.N. III having defeated the Akrid and only being left with defeating the Snow Pirates who were rebelling against their governance. However, in the game NEVEC has not yet become an antagonist and instead is helping make the planet habitable to humans by constructing thermal posts on the planet to combat the harsh icy weather conditions.

Though as the story progresses Jim begins to unravel the dark secrets of NEVEC.

Gameplay

The game's gameplay will be more similar to the first game with a story-driven adventure rather than the second game which replaced the story-driven narrative with a simple co-op and grind-heavy campaign. Using the game's mission-based mechanics, players can choose to take on core quests that progress the story, or side-quests to help out fellow colonists on the planet. The game will allow players to openly explore areas in a style similar to role-playing games with the ability to talk to non-player characters, obtain side-quests, upgrade equipment and build their own bipedal rigs using items gathered throughout the campaign.

Once again, the antagonists of the game will be the Akrid, aliens indigenous to the planet of E.D.N. III.

BioShock Infinite is an upcoming survival horror first-person shooter video game and the third game in the BioShock series. Previously known as "Project Icarus", it is being developed by Irrational Games for a worldwide release on February 26, 2013 release on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, and later on the Wii U. BioShock Infinite is not a direct sequel or prequel to previous BioShock games, taking place in an earlier period and different setting, though it features similar gameplay concepts and themes.

Building on the ideas of American Exceptionalism in the early 20th century, the game's protagonist, former Pinkerton agent, Booker DeWitt, is sent in 1912 to the floating air-city of Columbia to seek out a young woman, Elizabeth, who has been held captive there for the last twelve years. Though Booker rescues Elizabeth easily, the two are pursued by warring factions on the collapsing city: the Founders that strive to keep the city for pure American citizens, and the Vox Populi, a hodgepodge group of several smaller factions trying to seize control from the Founders. Booker finds Elizabeth to be central to this conflict, and that she also holds strange powers to manipulate rifts in the time-space continuum that ravage Columbia. Ken Levine, the lead designer for the game, took inspiration for the story and setting from both historical pieces at the turn of the 19th century, as well as more recent events including the "Occupy" protests. Levine took an unorthodox approach with the voice actors for Booker and Elizabeth, Troy Baker and Courtnee Draper, respectively, by developing the script and details of the story alongside them during their voice work, allowing them to help define the characters and deliver more convincing performances within the game.

The player controls Booker throughout the game, eventually teaming with the computer-controlled Elizabeth. Like previous BioShock games, the player uses a combination of weapons, psychokinetic powers granted through "vigors" and "nostrums", and Elizabeth's own powers to fight off hostile foes and make their way through Columbia. In contrast to the limited spaces of the underwater city of Rapture, the open-air city of Columbia provides for more combat challenges, including combat that takes place aboard the city's Skyline rollercoaster-like rail system. The game will also feature a "1999 Mode", harkening back to games like System Shock 2 where decisions made by the player will have a more permanent impact on the game, possibly leading the player to an unwinnable situation and requiring a restart from an earlier saved game.

BioShock Infinite has received early pre-release attention, winning several awards including the "Best of Show" at the 2011 E3 show.

The primary setting of BioShock Infinite is a city suspended in the air by giant blimps and balloons, called "Columbia", named in homage to the female personification of the United States. Unlike the secret development of the underwater city of Rapture used as the settings for BioShock and BioShock 2, Columbia was built and launched in 1900 by the American government to much fanfare and publicity. The city was meant to symbolize the ideas of exceptionalism;[3][4] the reveal trailer for the game alludes to the 1893 Worlds Fair which is historically considered to be the emergence of American exceptionalism.[5] On the surface, Columbia appeared to be designed as a floating Worlds Fair that could travel across the globe; however, some time after its launch but before the game's events, the city was revealed to be a well-armed battleship, and became involved in an "international incident" by firing upon a group of Chinese civilians during the Boxer Rebellion.[6][7]

The city was disavowed by the United States government, and the location of the city was soon lost to everyone else.[6][8] The city became, as described by Nick Cowen of The Guardian, "a kind of roaming boogieman moving from place to place and imposing its will on people below".

BioShock Infinite Preview, Trailer,news,cheat codes,trainer,first look,HD pictures,cover,screenshots,

As a result of the city's isolation, a civil war eventually broke out on Columbia between different factions of citizens, each trying to seize control of the city from the powers-that-be.[10] At the time of the game's events, only two main factions remain. One group are the Founders, the remnants of those retaining power over the city led by Zachary Hale Comstock. This is the city's ruling class, which seeks to keep Columbia purely for American citizens while denying foreigners the same privileges. The other is a group named Vox Populi (Latin for "voice of the people"), a rag-tag resistance group, led by Daisy Fitzroy, opposed to the ultranationalists. Vox Populi is formed from several factions with similar ideologies that fought to seize control and restore the rights of Columbia citizenship to all. However, years of war and struggle have driven Vox Populi to fight the powers-that-be solely out of blind hatred, resulting in more violent and brutal methods and leading to subfactions in the group.[10]

Like Rapture, Columbia is considered a dystopia, but with signs present suggesting a theocratic government taking control at some point, and similar racial-purification concepts such as Nazism, jingoism, and xenophobia.[4][11][12][13] One of the items in the press packages for the game included a tag that would purportedly be worn by immigrants aboard Columbia, requiring those of non-European descent, which includes Papists, Gypsies, Irish and Greeks,[13] to list out numerous details, including religious affiliation and data relating to eugenics; another item was a Columbia propaganda poster that warned "We must all be vigilant to ensure the purity of our people."[13] Columbia has been compared to a cross between steampunk and the Star Wars Bespin cloud city,[12] as well as the airships of Final Fantasy settings[11] though Irrational's Ken Levine has compared the weaponized city to the Death Star.

Plot

The events of the game take place in 1912. The player assumes the identity of Booker DeWitt, a disgraced former agent of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, who was dismissed for behavior beyond the acceptable bounds of the Agency.

BioShock Infinite Preview, Trailer,news,cheat codes,trainer,first look,HD pictures,cover,screenshots,

He is hired by mysterious individuals, aware of Columbia's location, and tasked to infiltrate the air-city and rescue a young woman named Elizabeth, who has been held aboard the air-city for the last twelve years.[6][12] Though Booker finds Elizabeth easily enough, he quickly discovers that Elizabeth is central to the civil war raging in the city, her rescue being the start of the chain of events that ultimately lead to Columbia's down-fall.[15] Each faction seeks to use Elizabeth to turn the tide of the conflict in their favor; the Founders believe Elizabeth's powers can help end the conflict and place them back in control, while the Vox Populi would rather kill Elizabeth than allow the Founders to get their hands on her, believing a prophecy that if Elizabeth falls, so does Columbia. Booker and Elizabeth are forced to trust each other in order to escape.[8][10][16] Elizabeth also seeks to understand the powers that she has been given, believing Comstock to be responsible, and refuses to leave Columbia until she learns the truth.[9] To complicate matters, the pair is chased by Songbird, a large, robotic bird-like creature who had been Elizabeth's friend and warden over the last twelve years of her imprisonment.[17][18] Songbird was designed by its creator to feel betrayal should Elizabeth escape, comparable to an abusive spouse, according to Hilary Goldstein of IGN, and Elizabeth notes she "would rather be killed than be recaptured by Songbird."[18]
Elizabeth stares at an unfamiliar sight after she and Booker are pulled through a tear: a theater marquee announcing the showing of Revenge of the Jedi. The area of this setting came from art assets that Irrational had developed for another scrapped project.

In addition to the internal strife, Columbia is ravaged by tears in the fabric of space-time.[18][19] A strange shimmering effect as seen by Booker causes momentary changes to pictures, banners, and people, representing the nearby presence of a tear.

BioShock Infinite Preview, Trailer,news,cheat codes,trainer,first look,HD pictures,cover,screenshots,

The tears have brought seemingly anachronistic elements into the Columbia of 1912; for example, an early gameplay demo footage features a record player in a bar plays a woman singing the lyrics to Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World".[20] 1UP.com's preview of the 2011 E3 game demonstration denotes that at one point, Booker and Elizabeth find themselves in 1983, evident by a movie marquee showing Revenge of the Jedi (the original working name for Return of the Jedi), a result of a misfire of Elizabeth's powers involving tears in the fabric of space-time when she tries to help revive a horse.[9][19]

Though the game takes place before the events of the previous two BioShock games (occurring in 1960 and 1968, respectively), Irrational Games has not confirmed if BioShock Infinite shares the same universe with these titles; Ken Levine left the question of the possibility unanswered in an interview stemming from the game's announcement.

Gameplay

Like Bioshock, BioShock Infinite is a survival horror first-person shooter with role-playing elements similar to the previous two games. As Booker, the player moves about the various structures of Columbia using a grappling hook, a series of railways connecting the buildings called the Skyline, and other transport means to search for Elizabeth. The player will gain weapons which can be used in numerous ways within the environment, including on the Skyline, to defeat enemies.[22] Booker gains powers and abilities by using vigors and nostrums that are found through Columbia, the equivalent of BioShock's plasmids and tonics. Vigors grant activated powers such as telekinesis, electricity manipulation, or animal control (as seen by the manipulation of a flock of crows within the gameplay demo), while nostrums are passive abilities that can improve the player's strength or damage resistance.

Unlike BioShock in which the player was able to use special Gene Banks to alter the loadout of plasmids and tonics they had, the choice to imbibe a certain vigor or nostrum is permanent and cannot be changed later in the game, placing emphasis on the consequences of the player's choices throughout the game.[4][17] Infinite does not use EVE, the equivalent of magic points, for powering abilities gained by vigors or nostrums. Each container of vigor has a limited number of charges in it, and while more can be found around the game's environment, the player can only carry a limited number of vigors into battle, with more powerful vigors containing fewer charges.[23] Nostrums are permanent changes to the character and cannot be removed once used. These come in two types, stable and unstable varieties, the latter referred to as "potlucks". Stable nostrums are more expensive, but the player knows exactly what effect applying the nostrum will gain them. Unstable nostrums are cheaper or can be found lying around the environment, but upon use, require the player to select one of four random effects to alter their character, an idea inspired by Heroes of Might and Magic according to Levine.[23]

Once reunited with Elizabeth, who also has a set of such powers, the player must work together with her to escape Columbia. For example, Elizabeth can create a localized rainstorm on foes, which the player, as Booker, can then fire upon with an electricity-based attack, electrocuting the foes.[6] The player will not be directly in control of Elizabeth, but instead she will react to the player and the current situation in a manner similar to the AI Director in Left 4 Dead, according to Levine.[22] However, using Elizabeth's powers also harms her, an action compared to the choice of killing or saving the Little Sisters from the previous games.[12] Elizabeth also has the ability to interact with the tears in the fabric of space-time, pulling objects from the other side to use within Columbia, escaping from battle through these, or repairing them.[18] The player will need to protect Elizabeth, but will not need "to babysit and hand-hold" her through the game.[24] Levine has stated about working with Elizabeth in the game that "in no way, shape, or form is this an escort mission", identifying that players reacted negatively to a late-game stage in the original BioShock in which they were tasked to protect a Little Sister.[25]

Several different human forces are at work opposed to the player's progress within the city.[3] Furthermore, the player and Elizabeth are chased by Songbird (sometimes simply referred to as "Him"), who is attempting to snatch Elizabeth from the player after being her guardian and companion for the last twelve years.[17] A set of larger, mechanical enemies created by the Founders, dubbed "Heavy Hitters", act as mini-bosses through the game, demanding new tactics from the player.

One type of these are the Handymen, so named for their large porcelain doll-like hands; they are robotic-like monsters housing a human heart and head, with the ability to jump large distances and easily throw the player- and non-player characters alike.[17][18][27][28][29] A second class are the Motorised Patriots, once used as tour guides for the city, decorated in patriotic colours and wear a wax mask of George Washington, assaulting its foes with a "peppermill" automatic machine gun.[26] The player will have several options of approaching the Heavy Hitters, such as by using stealth to bypass the encounter, or to hack into the machine and take control of it.[26] The Boys of Silence are men in foppish outfits locked into a metal helmet with giant ears; the humans inside are blind but due to the helmet have super-human hearing, and act as Columbia's security system, requiring the player to chose to carefully between stealth and a direct assault, whereupon the Boys can scream to call in back up.[30] Finally, the Siren is a mysterious, completely enshrouded female figure, based on the Spiritualism movement near the end of the 19th century, that can revive defeated foes during combat, requiring the player to decide whether to concentrate attacks on the Siren or the newly-revived enemies.[31]

The Skyline is a rail-based system (originally designed for moving cargo around Columbia but later used for personnel transport) similar to the concept found in the Ratchet & Clank games and described by Levine as "a roller coaster, over another roller coaster, over another roller coaster";[24] players activate a wrist-mounted tool that Booker and enemies wear to jump and hang onto the self-powered tracks. Players can jump onto, off of, and between Skyline tracks at any time, and may face enemies that use the system to attack; the player can use weapons in Booker's free hand to defend the character. The freedom of movement along the Skyline allows for several varieties of combat, including flanking, cover, and area-of-effect attacks through creative uses of the system.
Irrational Games has stated that the game's set pieces are not heavily scripted; this statement was made in response to reaction to a gameplay preview video released during the week of September 21, 2010, which, within ten minutes, demonstrated numerous elements of the game. The development team called the game's pacing "like BioShock 1", and that while there will be some scripted set pieces, the developers want the player to be able to explore Columbia at their own pace.

Unlike Jack or Delta, the silent protagonists of BioShock and BioShock 2 respectively, and who are guided by radio commands from a third party, Booker will be a vocal character, with dialogue designed to aid the player in leading Booker to complete his mission.[17]

In addition to the normal game mode, BioShock Infinite will include a "1999 Mode", so named for the release year of System Shock 2, a game worked on by Levine and several other Irrational Games developers. 1999 Mode is a more challenging version of the game, requiring the player to make mutually exclusive specialization choices, such as choosing which weapon type that Booker is proficient at, which may make later parts of the game difficult to complete, and may require the player to reload from earlier saved games to manage their resources better.[34][35]

Irrational Games has not committed to including a multiplayer element within the game. While the team have experimented with concepts for a multiplayer component, Levine has stated that they would only proceed forward if it had elements not otherwise found in multiplayer games like Halo or Call of Duty.[36][37] At least two multiplayer modes were examined but later scrapped by Irrational. One mode was a co-operative mini-game similar to tower defense having the player characters miniaturized within an old-time arcade machine to defend against waves of enemies. This mode was cancelled early on to focus on a four player co-operative mode tentatively titled "Spec-Ops", similar to the mode of the same name from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The four players would have worked their way through levels from the single player game to complete missions under certain requirements. Further development on "Spec-ops" has since been dropped.[38]

During Sony's E3 press conference on June 6, 2011 creative director Ken Levine announced on-stage that BioShock Infinite will support the PlayStation Move.[39] Though some reports believed that a new Move controller would be produced for the game based on information from Sony, 2K Games debunked these stories, stating that no new hardware is being developed for the game.

Development

Though BioShock Infinite shares the same name with the other two games, Levine has stated that this is a new direction, and was coy to answer if they shared the same universe.[21] Levine referred to the term BioShock not as a specific location or setting, but a concept conjoined by two ideas: the exploration of a fantastical setting, and the use of a large number of tools and abilities in creative manners to survive.[14] Along with the System Shock games, which Levine and other Irrational developers had worked on, the titles share the same idea of a "component of learning about a new place" and shocking the player into discovering more of the setting, according to Levine.

Levine affirmed that with the similarities between the games, "It would be dishonest to say this is not BioShock".[22] Similarly, Timothy Gerritsen, director of product development, stated they wanted to keep the feel of the BioShock experience but still consider Infinite to be a new intellectual property; as a means to sever the implied connection to the previous games, the teaser purposely shows a Big Daddy figurine being crushed at the onset.[42] This was furthered by the selection of the word Infinite as part of the title, to reflect the "many possibilities" they wanted to explore with the BioShock concept.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is an upcoming video game in development by Gearbox Software and is to be published by Sega for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360. The game is a first-person shooter based on the characters and creatures of the Alien franchise, particularly the film Aliens.

Gameplay

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a sci-fi/horror first-person shooter which puts the player in the role of a United States Colonial Marine as seen in the film Aliens. The player will have access to iconic weapons from the movie such as the flamethrower, pulse rifle, smartgun, shotgun, pistol, RPGs, and robotic sentry turrets. Players will also be able to use welding torches to seal doors and motion trackers to detect unseen enemies.

Initially it was announced that the game would involve squad-based gameplay, allowing the player to issues orders to AI-controlled marines using context-sensitive commands.[8] However, Gearbox later revealed that this feature was dropped to make gameplay more accessible.[9] Aliens: Colonial Marines will have no HUD to provide the player with onscreen information.

Gameplay types have been described as "Gauntlet Runs", where players must fight enemies as they travel from point A to point B, and "Last Stand" moments, where players must defend a specific area by welding doors and/or setting up automated sentry turrets.

The players will gain experience points when killing enemies and completing certain objectives. These experience points will allow players to customize the appearance of their character, purchase upgrades for weapons, and unlock other skill sets. All of which carry over to other gameplay modes.

The primary enemies of the game are the xenomorphs from the first three films, which include the Facehugger, Chestburster, and "Drone" alien from Alien, the "Warrior" and the "Queen" aliens from Aliens, as well as the "Runner" alien from Alien 3. The game will also feature never before seen xenomorph types created by Gearbox Software.

The specifics of these new alien types have been kept a secret, with the exception of the "Crusher" alien, which was revealed in the E3 2011 Walkthrough demo.[13] Along with being able to traverse different surfaces from any angle, Gearbox and Sega have also stated that the aliens' AI will use the environment to set up sneak attacks, and group tactics to overwhelm the player.[14] Not all enemies will be aliens as players will find themselves also fighting human enemies in the form of Weyland-Yutani commandos and mercenaries.

Multiplayer

Aliens: Colonial Marines features a campaign with dynamic drop-in/drop-out cooperative multiplayer for up to 4 players online or 2 players locally via split screen.[16] Competitive multiplayer has been confirmed, and Gearbox has only shown Aliens vs Marines team deathmatch 6 v 6 gameplay. Gearbox has said that there are multiple "objective based modes" as well that have not been announced yet.

Story

Described as a true sequel to James Cameron's film, the story of Aliens: Colonial Marines takes place after the events of the third film, Alien 3.

At PAX East 2012, Gearbox Software's Community Manager confirmed that the game is considered an official part of the Alien franchise's canon by 20th Century Fox.[19] Much of the main plot was written by Battlestar Galactica writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle.[20] The story is told through the eyes of Corporal Christopher Winter, a Colonial Marine who is part of a search and rescue team sent to investigate the U.S.S. Sulaco in search of Ellen Ripley, Corporal Dwayne Hicks, and the rest of the missing marines who were dispatched to LV-426. The Sulaco, and the derelict alien spacecraft from Alien as well as LV-426 itself will all serve as environments in the game, as well as other locations yet to be detailed.[21][22]

Gearbox has stated that they were invited to speak with Ridley Scott and view the script for his Alien prequel Prometheus, insinuating that there may be connections or references to the events of Prometheus in Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Development

A previous game titled Aliens: Colonial Marines was developed by Check Six Games and was to be published by Fox Interactive and Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 2 in 2001, but was cancelled before its release. A more traditional first-person shooter, it shared the same subject matter and setting as the upcoming Gearbox-developed game.

Its story was to be set between the events of Aliens and Alien 3, concerning a rescue team of Colonial Marines searching for the Sulaco. Despite the similarities in gameplay and story, however, Gearbox has claimed that their upcoming game is unrelated to this early version.
On December 11, 2006, Sega announced they had purchased the electronic rights to the Alien franchise from 20th Century Fox.[25] On December 15, Gearbox Software and Sega announced that they were working on a completely new game based on the franchise.[22] In February 2008 the game's title was officially announced as Aliens: Colonial Marines and it was featured as the cover story of Game Informer magazine.

The development team took great pains to recreate the vehicles and settings of the films by using original set designs to recreate the exterior and interior of the Sulaco and LV-426.Concept artist Syd Mead, who had worked on Aliens, was hired to design areas of the Sulaco that did not appear in the film but would be used in the game.[26]

A Shacknews article dated November 21, 2008, reported that the Aliens: Colonial Marines game had been delayed, supposedly because of layoffs at Gearbox Software. However, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford insisted that development on the game continues. According to a Kotaku article, Sega said that their new Aliens vs. Predator game is to be released in early 2010 would be the first of their Aliens games to be released, meaning that Aliens: Colonial Marines will be sometime afterwards.

At the 2010 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), Gearbox showed five new screenshots and stated that the game remains a priority for them.

In the beginning of June 2011, Gearbox unveiled a teaser trailer and officially announced that Colonial Marines would be presented on E3 2011 and that the game is expected to be released in spring 2012.

On January 26, 2012, Sega announced that it had decided to delay the game yet again, pushing it to a fall 2012 release date. In addition, Gearbox Software also announced that they would be releasing a new trailer.[33] On May 21, 2012, Gearbox Software has announced a February 12, 2013 launch for Aliens: Colonial Marines on PS3, 360 and PC with Wii U version announcement "at a later time".
